I think it's a really low threshold for that Scarlet. They gave us that a couple of years back because they had down that DH was working 39 hrs a week, earning nothing  so were basing on my part time 9K earnings that year. Think it might be a 12K threshold or thereabouts (I'm guessing). Really low though. I think she means WTC and CTC though?

You can claim WTC if you are over 25 with no kids and have a low income. If you have kids you can claim it from 16 providing at least one person in the household works and earns a low wage.

It's about a 15k threshold to get help with extra health cost as well as WTC / CTC. Your friend must have meant a NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate, which they sent us by mistake.

Does anyone know where it shows figures of how much you need to earn to claim wtc. I can only find this http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/taxcredits.htm and if I am reading it right, it only tells me how much you will receive. Maybe I am reading it wrong though :-?

Think it's based on the income thresholds and withdrawal rates which have changed, as has the income disregard. From that they calculate what you're entitled to by taking the elements available, minus withdrawal. The withdrawal rate has gone up, the income thresholds and disregard (difference in income year to year) have gone down. Even childcare they used to cover 80%, they now cover 70%.

Have you tried the tax credits calculator or the entitled to one? I plugged into that with 2 LOs and it increased our rate, but the WTC wasn't very high, it was mostly CTC.

Thanks Beth. I just wanted to see if I could work out how much we should receive.

Dh has not had a wage increase for 2 years and has had to agree not to receive one for another 3 years. I am self employed but not actually earning anything yet so we did not expect to lose the wtc.
